Australian Delegation Is Robbed; Athletes Receive Security Orientation

The chief of the Australian mission confirmed on Sunday (the 31st) that a laptop computer and t-shirts from the delegation were stolen at the outbreak of a fire in their building at the Olympic Village on Friday (the 29th).

According to Kitty Chiller, a computer belonging to one of the cycling team members disappeared and IT equipment from the Australian office was ransacked, although nothing was taken.

She said further that in the midst of the confusion surrounding the evacuation of the building, she saw people leaving with delegation t-shirts.

"We don't know how many were stolen. And yes, this is worrisome."

Ms. Chiller said that effective security had been increased at the Olympic Village, with a security professional stationed at every door in the building.

Despite the theft, she said that she isn't worried about the safety of the team. "In terms of general security, we feel safe".

The team, however, has taken precautions to prevent additional theft.

"We reminded all the members of the team to keep their doors locked, both to their individual rooms and their apartments, and to keep all objects of value in locked drawers. We have a safe in the operational area, where they can put passports and wallets if they want to. Medals will be kept there as well", she explained.

She also said that she didn't know how many people had taken team t-shirts. They were part of the long-sleeve uniform - what she refers to as "Zika t-shirts" - and were still in their packaging.
