Olimpiada Rio 2016

On the Eve of the Opening, IOC President Says That 'It's Not an Easy Moment'

Thomas Bach, President of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) admitted that some problems had shown up at the last minute and haven't been resolved yet for the Rio Olympic Games.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday at 8 pm, at Maracanã.

The greatest problem affecting the Olympic organization is financial. The lack of money has necessitated the cutting of items that were in the budget. Every day, new and unexpected expenses materialize.

In the Wednesday (3) meeting of the IOC, the crisis was evident, and various participants criticized problems in Rio, like transportation, huge lines for entrance, and missing decorations, beyond questions about the Olympic Village, since most of these have been resolved.

Bach cited an overriding tension due to things that still need to be resolved, and said that he hopes that he will never have to go through this again.

He mentioned Brazil's economic crisis, saying that it was the worst in history, while defending the model adopted by the international committee. The IOC doesn't guarantee the event financially like FIFA does for some events, including the World Cup.

"The IOC has always been totally supportive of the Rio-2016 Committee. This is not a very easy moment, right now, this exact moment, but we are giving all of our support. You will be able to say afterward that the financial model survived and all of this tension, I sincerely hope that we never have to go through this again in the future", the President of the International Olympic Committee concluded.

Even so, the German confirmed that he believes that there will be a good opening ceremony and that the games will be successful.
