Hours Before Olympics Opening Ceremony, Protest Against Temer Blocks Avenue in Rio

This Friday (5), a demonstration against interim president Michel Temer closed off Atlântica Avenue in both directions, in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.

The protest was organized by the Brasil Popular, Povo sem medo (People without Fear) and Esquerda Socialista (Socialist Left) movements.

There were flags from leading syndicates, such as CUT, and from the PT, PCdoB, PSOL, PSTU and PCB parties. Most banners read, "Temer Out" and "putschist".

According to state congressman and precandidate for the mayoral seat, Marcelo Freixo (PSOL-RJ), the protest is a way to show the world the violations to democracy taking place in Brazil.

The demonstration made its way to the front of the Olympics megastore and was staved off by police. Inside, the public was divided, clapping or making negative hand gestures.

Through a vehicle sound system, organizers gave speeches in English and Portuguese, greeting tourists.

The protest spread across three blocks in Copacana and made its way to the end of the beach. Protesters began to disperse around 3 pm.

The organization reported 15,000 attendees. The Military Police will not comment on the number of attendees, but agreed with the protest leaders that it dispersed near the center of the International Media zone, in Post 5.
