Olimpiada Rio 2016

Olympic Saturday Brings Tears of Pain, Redemption and Despair

There are many things that bring Olympic athletes to tears. During the first day after the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, when the majority of the competitions began, tears resulted from: redemption, disappointment, despair, pain and worry.

A broken leg, early elimination, excellent performances -at the Games, everything becomes more dramatic and it can be difficult to withhold emotion. Check out the most significant developments of the day:

Ming-Yen Tsai, from Taiwan, cried after being eliminated during the preliminary phase in Judo, in the 60kg category. He was defeated during the second match by Yanislav Gervech from Bulgaria.

Brazilian swimmer Brandonn Almeida, was also brought to tears after being eliminated during the 400 m medley -a competition in which he previously broke the junior world record. He returns to pool next Friday (12) to compete in the 1500 m freestyle.

Another Brazilian who cried after not achieving the expected result was Felipe Kitadai, in Judo. He was defeated in the quarter finals and during reclassification for the bronze. He was not able to repeat the performance from London 2012, when he came in third place.

Diego Hypólito, a Brazilian gymnast, cried after helping the Brazilian men's team classify for the final in the sport. The result is historic and unprecedented. Hypólito disappointed in the last two Olympics, after falling and not making it to the finals.

The Spanish swimmer Miguel Duran Navia takes the title for the most iconic tears seen at the Games up to now. He blew his start during the 400 m freestyle and was eliminated. However, the judges believed he was not to blame for the incident and was the victim of a referee error. As such, he was given another chance to compete for classification, but still did not manage to advance to the semifinals.

One of the favorites for the gold, the Brazilian judoka Sarah Menezes, was eliminated during her second match. The disappointment from not earning a medal at home would already warrant tears, but the situation was exacerbated by the pain of a dislocated elbow. She was injured after taking a hit from Mongol Urantsetseg Munkhbat, who won the match.

One of the most intense moments at the Olympics thus far belongs to French gymnast Samir Ait Said, who broke his leg after landing a vault in the gymnastics competition. His teammates showed concern over the serious contusion -he, however, maintained a calm composure while he was carried off in a stretcher.
