Rio 2016 Committee Supports Repression of Political Demonstrations: "We Want Clean Arenas"

In a press conference on Sunday morning (7), the Rio-2016 Committee said it stands behind the authorities that did not allow protests at the Olympic competition sites.

Saturday (6) was marked by a series of political demonstration attempts by small groups, which were managed by the police in charge of safety in the sporting arenas.

The committee said it would continue to resist the protests."We want clean arenas", said the group's Director of Communications, Mario Andrada.

In a manual prepared especially for fans and available on the committee's official website, there is an article that covers the topic and states that political demonstrations are not allowed.

According to the committee, however, police action will focus on visual issues. Booing, shouts and chants are not prohibited.

"If political booing were not allowed, a large part of the crowd would have been removed from the opening ceremony. People can protest. Law enforcement aims to address the visual", said Andrada.

"Large events require this type of policy to protect the sponsors who invested money and meet their expectations. In terms of the Olympics, the idea is to promote inclusion, or unity. Political demonstrations create divisions", he added.
