Ministry Finds 3,500 Illegal Workers in Olympic Village

The Labour Ministry has discovered that 3,500 employees at the Olympic Village are working without the correct paperwork. The illegal workers are serving in bars and restaurants on the site. Some of them, according to the Ministry, are working shockingly long shifts without food, water or decent working conditions.

The checks were made on Monday (8) and Tuesday (9). "In some places, the workers were on their feet the whole time: there weren't even chairs on which they could sit down. Some were working at stalls without roofs or overhead protection. At lunchtime, they had to sit on the floor," said the Ministry, in a statement published this Wednesday (10).

The companies responsible for this treatment were called upon to shed light on the circumstances. They must now sign a Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC), which will introduce measures to resolve these problems.

The Ministry also demands that these companies guarantee their staff use of the Olympic Village canteen, enable them to gain access to the site at the electronic entrance points and ensure they have a constant supply of water. They will be provided with substantial meals twice a day, as well as hats and sun cream.

The Rio 2016 Olympic committee have refused to comment on the situation.

At the end of July, the Ministry found 630 illegal workers on the Olympic Village construction site, and fined the organising committee R$ 315,000 (US$ 100,000).

The Ministry has seven investigation teams working permanently in Rio throughout the Olympic Games.
