Paralympic Ceremony Leaves Hole in the Field at Maracanã Stadium

The Paralympics left a hole 6 meters long by 4 meters wide in the lawn of Maracanã stadium. The image became visible on Wednesday (the 21st) during an overflight of the stadium by a helicopter.

The hole shocked Rio de Janeiro club leaders, who have plans to use Maracanã yet this year. The Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Rio-2016 Games has informed that a new lawn will be ready by the 30th of October. This is the date set for the organizers to return the arena back to the government of Rio de Janeiro.

According to the Games organizers, the hole was made for the installation of a robot that danced with American Amy Purdy, a double-amputee snowboard athlete, during the opening ceremony of the Paralympics. The dance was one of the high points of the event.

According to the committee's schedule, the expectation is that the field will need around 35 days to recuperate and be ready for games. Until now, the Rio de Janeiro teams don't know yet when they will be able to use the stadium.

The Flamengo soccer team has been planning for a match against Corinthians at Maracanã, which is now unlikely to happen. The match is scheduled for the 23rd of October.
