FROM RIO DE JANEIRO AND SÃO PAULO
The streets of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo saw some of the most violent protests since June on Monday night. There were clashes between protestors and the police, as well as acts of vandalism.
Two groups gathered at Avenida Paulista and at the Municipal Theatre in São Paulo, before later coming together at Praça da República in the city centre. The demonstration was a show of solidarity with the teachers on strike in Rio de Janeiro.
Among the demonstrators were 'black bloc' activists, and students and members of various social movements. Police launched at least six tear gas grenades in order to disperse protestors. Masked demonstrators responded with fireworks.
Some demonstrators attacked property in the area, using hammers, stones and even their feet, causing damage to public telephones, banks and bars. A police car was attacked and overturned.
In Rio, demonstrations in support of the teachers also ended in violence. Protestors launched homemade bombs and Molotov cocktails at City Hall, while buildings in the area had windows broken.
According to the police, approximately 10,000 people attended the protests. Figures from labor unions suggest the number was around 50,000.
