FROM RIO
One sign announces that the presence of dogs on the sand is prohibited. Another indicates that the practice of sports by the water's edge must not occur between 8am and 5pm.
The two signs, created by the Secretary of Public Order of the Rio City Government, have been present on the city's waterfront since December 3. This date marks the state of Operation Summer 2014, which aims to "bring order to the city's beaches."
If these rules are not obeyed, the offending individual will be reminded of them by the Municipal Guard. There are no fines established for these cases.
However, government workers are using tablet computers to dole out fines to beach shack owners and peddlers caught working illegally.
The system, which was given a test run on Tuesday, allows for immediate access to government databases, thus facilitating the process.
In order to monitor the waterfront in the coming months, the government will provide more than 300 guards and agents of the Secretary for Public Order. Inspections will even be carried out at night, with the aim of preventing illegal activity related to merchandise sold at the beach shacks and by peddlers.
