Court Has Yet to Start Collecting Fines From Mensalão Convicts

SEVERINO MOTTA
FROM BRASILIA

Although 20 of the 25 convicted at the mensalão trial are already in jail or serving alternative sentences, the Court has not even started charging over US$ 9,2 million -to be corrected- in fines imposed by the Supreme Court as part of their punishment.

In the time that the documents relative to the execution of each convict's sentence were delivered, the Supreme Court informed the Division of Penal Executions of the Federal District the amount of the individual fines.

So far, however, the division has not initiated procedures to collect the money or calculate the correct amounts. Officially, it said it would still analyze the cases.

The Attorney General's Office has a similar stance and said it is looking into the subject.

The largest fine, US$ 1,3 million, was imposed on the operator of the scheme, Marcos Valério de Souza. Former Minister José Dirceu, in turn, must pay US$ 297,000, and former PT President José Genoino, another US$ 206,000. All of the amounts still have to be corrected.

Lawyers for the convicted who spoke to Folha said they are awaiting subpoenas from the Court before discussing how the fines will be paid and that, in the future, they will negotiate eventual payments.
