Challenged by friends, the student Francisco Fernando Cruz, 23, who was an exchange student in the US, sent on January 8, 2014 false bomb threats by e-mail to the US police and Brazilian airline TAM.
The next day, he was arrested in Miami abord the same flight of the threat. Sentenced to one year and one day in prison, he returned to Sorocaba (in the state of Sâo Paulo) on the 19th.
Testimonial: "In June 2012, I went to the University of New York. I stayed for three semesters and worked as "au pair" [nanny]. At the time, I was part of a group on
the internet. We proposed challenges between us.
At first, I did not send emails [with false bomb threats], but I ended up sending it to meet a challenge.
I was visiting a friend in Montclair [New Jersey], and from there I sent messages on January 8, 2014. I was travelling to Brazil on the 10th.
Once the plane landed in Miami, the police came and asked me to accompany them. I knew what it was about, because there was no other reason.
"You do not need an attorney because we already know the truth and everything will be fine with you. We just need your confession." I then told them everything.
Then I saw a police officer filling out a form. I said, "Wow, am I being arrested?" They said yes.
I left prison on November 21st for good behavior and went to immigration, to be deported. Now, I can only return to the US after ten years.
I learned several lessons. Everyone deserves a second chance. I met many people who did not seemed to be the worst person in the world and did not deserve to be where they were.
And I have to take things more seriously. I was always playful and I will try to change a little. "
