Brazilian Rodrigo Gularte, 42, was officially informed by the government of Indonesia at about 4:00 pm on Saturday morning, April 25, that he will in fact be executed.
In January, another Brazilian, Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, was executed by a firing squad in Indonesia.
According to the Indonesian laws, the notification is the last step before the convicted is killed by firing squad in 72 hours.
Gularte is from the state of Paraná and comes from a wealthy family - he was arrested in 2004 on arrival at the airport of the capital city, Jakarta, with 6 kilos of cocaine hidden in surfboards.
The penalty for drug trafficking in Indonesia is death. The sentence was read in 2005.
Gularte's lawyer, Ricky Gunawan, says he was in a jail cell in Nusakambangan, in Cilacap (400 kilometers from Jakarta), when he was informed that he would be executed. Following his lawyer's instructions, Gularte refused to sign the Public Prosecutor's notification. The government of Indonesia says, however, that the refusal doesn't void the execution.
In the other cells, there are three Nigerians, two Australians, a woman from the Philippines, a man from Ghana and another from Indonesia. They all have been informed that they will be executed.
Gularte allegedly was the last to receive the notification.
Gunawan said that Gularte became nervous when he received the news because he still thought he might be released.
Gularte's lawyer is trying to prove in Indonesian courts that he suffers from schizophrenia, and, for that reason, couldn't be convicted.
"The sentence goes beyond common sense and sensibility. Executing someone with mental disorders doesn't make any sense to any government, especially for Indonesia, which says it has a democracy that respects human rights," said Ricky Gunawan.
