A 57 year old doctor died after being stabbed while cycling in the leisure track around Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, in Southern Rio.
Jaime Gold was attacked by two young men around 7pm on Tuesday, May 19th, and did not survive from the wounds to his abdomen and arm.
This was the fourth cyclist stabbing in this area in the last month.
Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon is a competition area in the Rio 2016 Olympics, and it was being patrolled by a military police car every three hours when the incident took place.
At the time when Gold was attacked, the car that was policing the area had just left the Leblon battalion and was headed towards Fonte da Saudade, three kilometers from the site.
The doctor died early on Wednesday, May 20th, at Miguel Couto Hospital. In the afternoon, five police cars, nine policemen on horses, eight motorcycles and eight bicycles patrolled the 7.5 kilometers of the pond.
Rio's State security secretary, Jose Mariano Beltrame, said the incident was "unacceptable".
"A place like the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon cannot, in any way, be the target of this kind of occurrence; it is a place where we all go to, it is our postcard," he said.
Gold was attacked opposite the nautical center in the Botafogo area. The young men, who were also on bicycles, took the victim's bike.
