Having lived in Brazil under the name of Francisco de Castro Visconti in Recife for nearly 30 years, the Italian mafioso Pasquale Scotti, 56, was arrested by the Federal Police on Tuesday (26). He is one of Italy's most wanted fugitives.

According to the Italian authorities, Scotti was the head of the "military arm" of the Nuova Camorra Organizzata in Naples, headed by Raffaele Cutolo, who is serving multiple life sentences for murder.

Scotti was arrested in Italy in 1984, but he escaped from the Casoria hospital at which he was detained. He subsequently disappeared, and according to the Federal Police, ex-mafiosos had suggested that he was dead.

The Italian authorities accuse Scotti of involvement in 26 murders in Italy between 1980 and 1983, as well as extortion, possession of illegal weapons and resisting arrest.

In a statement, Scotti said that he arrived in Brazil around 1986, obtaining false documents from a man in Fortaleza, Ceará, and "wandered through various states" before deciding to become a businessman.
