FROM RIO

One of the main tourist attractions of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Teresa tram line began to run again on Monday (27), in a test phase and within a restricted section.

The tram line was suspended in August 2011, when an accident with one of the trams killed six passengers and left more than 50 injured.

Since then, works aiming to improve the transport safety have been done. The inauguration of the complete work has been delayed several times.

According to the latest estimate of the Department of Transportation, it was planned for the first half of 2017, but the department has already informed that the whole construction schedule is being reviewed and a new date, later than this one, must be submitted to the governor Luiz Fernando Pezão (PMDB ) in September.

In this test phase, it travels a distance of 1.7 km, between Largo da Carioca and Largo do Curvelo. This represents 16% of the original tram line route, of 10.5 km.

The service is operational from Monday to Saturday between 11 am and 4 pm, with 20-minute intervals. The trams have a capacity of 32 passengers. The trip takes about 15 minutes.

Unlike what used to happen before the accident, standing or traveling in the stirrups is not allowed anymore.

During this trial period, the trips won´t be charged.
