Rousseff and Ex-President Lula Reveal Their Disappointment with the Votes and "Betrayals" of Former Allies

FROM BRASÍLIA

President Dilma Rousseff tuned in for the voting from the library of the Planalto Palace in the company of ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as well as other PT ministers and politicians.

Lula da Silva summed up his feelings for former Minister of Transport Alfredo Nascimento's (PR-AM) pro-impeachment vote with one word: "Disappointment".

For the administration, the parliamentarian's vote was motivated by his desire for revenge after being exonerated by Rousseff in 2011.

The betrayals in the PSD (Social Democractic Party) also frustrated the president's team, who blamed the party's national presidents, Gilberto Kassab, and from the PP, Ciro Nogueira, for the defeat.

Rousseff responded to the speeches of some of the parliamentarians in favor of her impeachment. "How can a person say they want to bring an end to corruption while looking at Eduardo Cunha [speaker of the lower house]?", she asked.

A defeat in the Lower House does not immediately ensure Rousseff's temporary removal; senators must ratify the decision.
