Supreme Court Judge Responsible for the Operation Car Wash Dies in a Plane Crash

Supreme Court judge Teori Zavascki, 68, rapporteur for the blockbuster Operation Car Wash, died in the afternoon of Thursday (19) in a plane crash off the coast of Paraty (RJ).

The Rio Fire Department reported that at least three people died in the crash. No information so far on the other occupants. The capacity of the aircraft is seven people, including crew.

Court judge since 2012, he was overseeing Operation Car Wash cases involving people with privileged forum, such as congressmen and government ministers. He had been working on the final phase of the homologation analysis for Odebrecht's largest collaboration agreement, expected to implicate a great number of politicians.

The aircraft, prefix PR-SOM, had left the Campo de Marte airport, in São Paulo, at 01:01 p.m. According to Infraero and Cenipa (Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents), it belongs to Emiliano Empreendimentos e Participações Hoteleiras, controller of the hotel Emiliano. Carlos Alberto Filgueiras, the owner of the hotel Emiliano, was also on the plane.

The president of Brazil's Supreme Court, Carmen Lúcia and President Michel Temer were informed of the accident.
