FROM BRASÍLIA

With eight ministers investigated in the wake of the Lava Jato operation in Brazil, on Wednesday, April 19, President Michel Temer participated in a ceremony along with Judge Sergio Moro in commemoration of the Brazilian Army Day.

At the official gallery, President Temer insisted on greeting Moro– however, they did not talk or sit near each other. Judge Moro received the Honored Military Merit medal, given by the Brazilian Army to people who perform relevant services to the Brazilian nation.

Military agents, politicians, celebrities and jurists also were given the medal. Those honored with the medal included TV host Luciano Huck and Supreme Court Justices Edson Fachin and Luís Roberto Barroso. Fachin and Barros, however, did not take part in the event.

In his speech given at the ceremony, the commander of the Army, General Eduardo Villas Bôas, said that Brazil is going through a "severe moral crisis," which is "compromising the future" of the country.

Villas Bôas also said that the crisis "blurs the perception" of the national project, which is dispersed in "struggles for personal and corporate interests that overshadow the national interests." He said, however, that these facts cannot "serve paralyzing disputes," and that the country's constitution must be respected.

As the president of the country, Temer cannot be investigated for his acts prior to the beginning of his mandate.
