FROM BRASÍLIA
The Brazilian Social Democracy Party decided in an assembly that took place in Brasília on Monday (the 12th) that it would continue to be a part of Temer's governing coalition. "The PSDB will not take any steps to leave the government", said senator José Serra before the assembly was over.
The senator said that a new course of action may be taken if new facts come to the surface, but guaranteed that the party would not be handing over any cabinet positions.
Despite the fact that the momentum to leave the governing coalition grew last week, particularly with the support of the party's interim president, Tasso Jereissati, other sectors of the party pushed back in order to avoid the rupture. São Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin, and Aécio Neves, who was recently suspended from the Senate, led the efforts to remain in support of the government.
The party's main leaders and officials sided with the Temer administration during a assembly in order to get the president's reforms passed.
During the encounter, Mr. Alckmin said that the party should remain in the governing coalition until Temer's pension, labour and political reforms are implemented. In his opinion, the party's stance should be associated to the urgency of getting the president's agenda through congress.
