FROM RIO

Judge Sergio Moro sentenced ex-governor Sérgio Cabral (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party) to 14 years and 2 months in prison, condemning him for the charges of corruption and money laundering, in addition to levying a fine of nearly R$600,000 (US$ 182,000).

Prosecutors said he received kickbacks in exchange for granting building contracts, including the expansion of the Copacabana metro and the revamping of the Maracanã stadium, where the 2014 football World Cup final took place

The move is part of a vast investigation into corruption known as Lava Jato, or Car Wash. He is still being tried as a defendant in 9 other cases related to the operation. Cabral is negotiating a plea-bargain agreement.

Former secretary to the governor Wilson Carlos and employee Carlos Emanuel Miranda were also condemned.

Cabral's wife, Adriana Ancelmo, as well as Wilson Carlos', Mônica Carvalho were both acquitted.

Incarcerated since November 0f 2016, the ex-governor was charged in the case with having received R$2,7 million (US$ 730 thousand) in cash for an earth-moving contract at Comperj, a Petrobras project.

The payment was solicited by Cabral himself, during a meeting at the Guanabara Palace in 2008 according the charge. The amount is equivalent to 1% of the total value that construction company Andrade Gutierrez was awarded for the project.

According to the Federal Prosecutor, the money was used to purchase high value items, like designer clothes, luxury apartments, armor-plating for cars and expensive dresses for the former-first-lady.

In his decision, Moro declared that Cabral's crime was one of the factors that brought on the financial crisis in Rio de Janeiro, during a "nearly bankrupt scenario, with suffering by the population and public servants".

For the judge, the PDMB Party boss, who was governor of Rio from 2007 to 2014, was the leader of the corruption scheme.
