FROM BRASÍLIA
The defense of President Michel Temer said the partial report presented by the Brazilian Federal Police which accuses Temer of "passive corruption" is "absolutely fragile, premature and uncertain."
In an interview given to Folha, Lawyer Gustavo Guedes, who is working in Temer's defense in the investigation in Brazil's Supreme Court (STF), denied the Federal Police's conclusion that there is "strong" evidence against President Temer.
The Federal Police say that Temer received R$ 500,000 (US$ 170,000) delivered in a suitcase from JBS through his former advisor, Rodrigo Rocha Loures.
"The police chief said that he could not finish the report because the expert's opinion is still pending," says Guedes.
Temer's lawyer also says that the police used unintelligible excerpts of the conversation between the president and businessman Joesley Batista.
"In the part selected by the police chief, of five sentences said by the president, three are unintelligible. How can anyone come to a conclusion on a theme when more than half of the sentences he believes are important are unintelligible?," says Guedes.
The lawyer says he believes that the Supreme Court should set limits to accept new evidence in the plea bargains it considers and said that he could use contradictions in Batista's plea bargain in his defense to void the agreement made with the Attorney General's Office.
