Brazilian Mint Begins Mega-Operation to End Passport Queue

FROM SÃO PAULO
Starting on Monday (the 24th), the Brazilian mint (Casa da Moeda) will begin a mega-operation for an unspecified period of time, seeing out all 175,000 passport requests that backlogged after the Federal Police stopped issuing them.
According to the institution, its employees will "work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting on Monday". The Brazilian mint will also cover all additional costs that the operation may entail.
The institution plans on processing all passport requests in up to 5 weeks. The passports will be issued on a first-come-first-served basis: those who put in their request earlier will get to pick up earlier.
Passport emissions have been suspended throughout the entire country ever since the Federal Police stated almost a month ago that it no longer had the resources to continue offering the service.
The Federal Police received R$ 102 million (US$ 32.4 million) in additional funds from the Justice Ministry last Friday (21) in order to resume printing passports.
Despite the suspension of emissions, Federal Police posts have continued to get requests and schedule interviews over the past month.
The Brazilian mint has the capacity to print out 15,000 passports on a given day. An average of 11,000 passports were requested on a daily basis before the service was suspended.
