LUCAS VETTORAZZO
FROM RIO DE JANEIRO

Colonel Luiz Gustavo Lima Teixeira, 48, commander of the 3rd Military Police Battalion of Rio de Janeiro, was shot dead on Thursday morning (26th).

He was driving an ordinary vehicle at Méier, a neighborhood in the Northern area of the city, where the battalion is located. The battalion has been under his command for one year and six months.

Teixeira was taken to the hospital, but could not be saved.

The colonel's car was hit by at least 17 bullets. Civil Police have begun investigations.

The Military Police (MP) have released two versions of the event. According to the first one, the colonel was the victim of an attack.

The second version claims he was shot during attempted robbery. A gang was carrying out a mass robbery (called arrastão) and allegedly reacted to his presence in the vehicle.

Teixeira had a wife and two children. Colonel Wolney Dias Ferreira, general-commander of the MP, lamented Teixeira's death.

Also on Thursday, an MP soldier died in Guadalupe, in Northern Rio as well. He was shot during gunfight with suspects in front of a neighborhood mall.

On Thursday (26th), amidst the Armed Forces action in Rio against organized crime, president Michel Temer sanctioned a bill to make carrying and illegal possession of firearms restricted to the Armed Forces, such as rifles, machine guns and submachine guns, a heinous crime.
