Public schools are still having difficulty guaranteeing that their students get high marks on Enem (National High School Exam).

The highest averages for schools on the exam in 2016 bear out this reality: only about 1 in 10 of the schools in the top 10% group are public schools - the majority of these federal, technical, or application schools.

At the other extreme, in the group at the bottom 10%, all of the 831 schools are state public schools.

A third of them enroll students from the "low" or "very low" socio-economic groups, which represent those students with the two characteristics that define the poorest students, according to the seven-level scale created by the Federal Ministry of Education (MEC).

According to Rommel Fernandes Domingos, the Principal of the school with the highest position, the exam results are important, but he refutes any notion that the score is a complete reflection of the students' education.

"Any school is much more complex and extensive than the result from Enem, but it has its value because it allows us to say how a group is in terms of the knowledge that is expected and measured", he said.

Domingos emphasized that his school has used the Enem results to improve activities related to essay writing preparation.

There are only six public schools in the top 100. The 88 highest positioned are federal, technical or application schools.

In general, these institutions enroll students from privileged socio-economic levels and select and admit their students through a mini-entrance exam process.
