Folha's Visual Changes Involve an Exclusive Font

FROM SÃO PAULO

Fonts were created or adjusted in order to optimize visibility on screens and make texts more readable.

Such adaptations also mean pages will load faster, thus reducing data consumption while improving user experience.

Catalan typographer Jordi Embodas has customized fonts at Folha's request and the fonts will be exclusively used by the newspaper.

Variations will be used for both screens and the printed edition, the latter of which is currently being developed.

The typographic palette will be standardized: only three of the nine fonts currently used on Folha's different platforms will be used.

Folha II, which was developed in 1996 and is the paper's standard font, which is used for headlines, has been adjusted.

On top of Folha II, Folha Texto (which contains serifs and is used for articles) and Folha Gráfico (font used for images and supplementary texts that does not contain serifs) were also elaborated.

According to graphic reform consultant Marcio Freitas, the idea is that the reader should be able to recognize the Folha brand regardless of the platform that is being used.

Increased organization and legibility mean that the newspaper will reinforce its identity and the importance of information, two crucial aspects at a time when professional journalism is reaffirming itself, Image Department editor Thea Severino said.
