FROM RIO

On its 100th birthday, the Cordão da Bola Preta carnival block brought together thousands of people in the streets of downtown Rio de Janeiro on the morning of Saturday, the 10th, while the traditional Galo da Madrugada block achieved a similar feat in the city of Recife.

"Carnival only kicks off with Bola", said José Julio, 85, who is retired and has attended the block ever since he was 18 years old. Over the past five years, he has been attending the block with his wife, Neude Costa, 85. The two met on a dating website.

Despite the high attendance, which just about took up the entire length of the street, a military police officer told Folha that this year's event was smaller than the previous years'.

Political messages were also displayed by partygoers attending the block. A group of employees from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) could be seen carrying balloons with the expression "Fora Temer" ("Out, Temer") on them: a reference to President Michel Temer (MDB).

Mayor Marcelo Crivella (PRB) was also targeted by demonstrators. Doctors working in the public municipal healthcare sector raised posters that read "Healthcare in trouble under Crivella", an allusion to the back pay that doctors and nurses at the city's family clinics are facing.
