Aécio Neves Denies Wealth Increase after 2014

DE BRASÍLIA

Aécio Neves reacted to the article published by Folha de S.Paulo on Tuesday (13), in which it stated his wealth went from R$ 2.5 million (US$ 767 thousand) in 2015 to R$ 8 million (US$ 2.45 million) in 2016, as the result of a financial transaction between Aécio and his sister Andrea Neves, involving ownership shares the senator held in the radio station Arco Íris.

"Such information is false and absurd. We don't know why the newspaper chose that date, seeing the senator hasn't purchased any assets since 2014. Therefore, contrary to what the article suggests, there hasn't been an increase in his wealth," he said.

"Folha has mistaken assets increase for appreciation of pre-existing assets. In order to state that the assets have tripled, it has mixed up unadjusted value of property with current sale amounts of an asset," the senator claimed.

"This is a serious and reproachable attempt to raise suspicions regarding a legitimate commercial transaction filed with the Federal Revenue Department, whose taxes have been duly paid," he pointed out.

The news article did not state that Aécio had purchased assets, and his wealth growth was reported by the senator himself in his tax return for calendar year 2017. The senator included his assets and rights in the field "wealth progress", where he reported such substantial increase over period of one year.

In December 2015, he claimed his wealth amounted to R$ 2.5 million (US$ 767 thousand). In December 2016, he reported the amount of R$ 8 million (US$ 2.45 million).
