CATIA SEABRA
FROM LARANJEIRAS DO SUL

Two of the three campaign buses for former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT- Worker's Party) were apparently hit by four gunshots on Tuesday (26), in Paraná.

One of the vehicles, carrying journalists, was hit three times. There were two bullet holes in its side, and one on side a window

Another bus carrying guests was hit by what appears to be the fourth gunshot. No one was hurt.

Gleisi Hoffmann, leader of the Worker's Party, said the incident was an ambush. Police have not confirmed the gunshots.

The attack occurred when the buses were leaving Quedas do Iguaçu, in Paraná, towards Laranjeiras do Sul.

It was not possible to identify those responsible for the attack.

Shortly before the incident, Lula was at a rally in which he promised to re-establish the Ministry of Agricultural Development and to legally recognize quilombola communities.

The city is surrounded by communities, in a region where approximately 8,000 families live.

Márcio Macedo, coordinator of the caravan, reported that he intends to investigate the attack and said that if anything happens to former president Lula or to any member of his delegation, president Michel Temer, the minister of public security, Raul Jungmann, and the governor of Paraná, Beto Richa (PSDB), "will be responsible."

Paraná has been the only state through which the caravan has passed that has not provided a police escort. In Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, the state military police and the federal road Police escorted the buses.
