Brazilian president Michel Temer announced he will not run for re-election, and that the former minister of finance, Henrique Meirelles, is MDB's pre-candidate.

"We call on you to be president of Brazil," said Temer at the end of his speech at MDB's event in Brasilia, for the release of document "Meeting with the Future" ("Encontro com o Futuro").

Less than two months ago, the two were together at the same venue, the party's headquarters in Brasilia, when the party announced both were pre-candidates. This time, the jingle "M for Michel, M for Meirelles, M for MDB", created when Meirelles joined the party, on April 3, was not played. Their faces were also not screened on the main stage where they delivered their speeches.

The president made a 15-minute speech in which he praised the former ministry. "I can say without a doubt that Meirelles is the best among the best."

Temer also said the country will be handed over to the next president in good conditions.

In his first speech as pre-candidate, Meirelles said he will seek the union of the Center.

"Let's start talking to all parties to see types of union. [...] if this is possible in the first round of the election, excellent. If not, I am sure I will be in the runoff.
