Rio de Janeiro is the only Brazilian municipality to feature on a ranking of the hundred cities most visited by foreigners in 2013, according to a study by the market intelligence firm Euromonitor International.
The city was in 92nd place, two below its 2012 position.
However, despite falling in the ranking, the number of foreigners visiting Rio rose by 10% during the same period.
São Paulo, which was in 97th place in the last survey, has dropped from the ranking altogether.
Just six Latin American cities make the ranking. The highest was Lima, the Peruvian capital, in 31st place, where numbers of foreign visitors have risen by 27.1%.
The top three cities are all from the Asia-Pacific region: Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok.
The year delay in publishing the data is due to the complexity of the research - cities from 54 different countries were assessed.
