SPECIAL ENVOY TO REDENÇÃO (State of PA)
In an anti-deforestation action in the Amazon this week, IBAMA (Brazilian Environmental Protection Agency) embargoed two JBS meatpacking plants and 13 other companies accused of purchasing cattle coming from areas of illegal deforestation.
Code-named Carne Fria (Cold Meat), the operation was the result of an investigation undertaken three years ago and isn't related in any way to the separate Federal Police operation against fraud at the meatpackers which gained national and international attention last week.
According to the environmental entity, JBS and other meatpackers in the States of Pará and Tocantins have disobeyed the Terms of Adjustment and Conduct they signed after negotiations with the Ministry of the Federal Public Prosecutor, in which these companies had committed to not purchase cattle from rural properties in areas under embargo for illegal deforestation.
Livestock ranching is the activity most responsible for deforestation in the Amazon: 65% of the total deforested area until 2014 had been converted to pasture land, according to satellite measurements from the National Space Research Institute.
JBS declared that there were no irregularities in their purchases of cattle and that they would appeal the action.
