The group of heads of Brazilian confederations and federations – exclusively male directors today – exposes an old system, with low turnover and little diversity, and positions occupied by an increasing number of politicians while suspicions of nepotism, embezzlement and corruption surround these sectors.
For two weeks, Folha news report team scrutinized the country's confederations and federations of agriculture, industry, commerce and transportation.
Of the total 114 agencies, the team managed to collect information on 99. Of these, 41 have presidents who have been in office for more than eight years.
These include 17 presidents leading the same agencies for over two decades. Fábio de Salles Meirelles, of the Agriculture Federation of São Paulo, has been the president in the same office for the longest period: 43 years.

At least nine directors and former directors are suspected of corruption or other crimes.
The reasons that explain the presidents' attachment to their position include the volume of resources transacted by the S System (Sesi, Senac and Senai, among others), which received R$ 16.4 billion (US$ 4.2 billion) in 2017, and the multinational companies' lack of interest to lead the agencies.
