Paintings of Guignard and Milton Dacosta Can Break Records at Auction

Alberto da Veiga Guignard and Milton Dacosta artworks that will go to auction this Thursday (13) at Bolsa de Arte Gallery, in São Paulo, may become the artists' most expensive ever sold at public sale.

"Flower Pot", painted by Guignard in 1930, has starting bid of US$ 1.14 million (R$ 4 million) and can reach up to US$ 1.7 million (R$ 6 million).

Dacosta's "Construction on Black Background", from 1956, will be offered for US$ 1.28 million (R$ 4.5 million), and it might reach US$ 1.56 million (R$ 5.5 million).

One of the masters of Brazilian modernism, famous for painting the misty landscapes of Minas Gerais, Guignard is a high performer in the market, particularly now, when a retrospective exhibition is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo.

His still lifes, especially the flower vases, are the most coveted by collectors.

A painting similar to the "Flower Pot" was sold at Christie's in New York, for US$ 761.5 thousand (R$ 2.6 million) 16 years ago.

A painting like Dacosta's, produced by one of the biggest names of Brazilian constructivism in the late 1950's, the peak of the movement in the country, does not usually appear in auctions.

His most expensive piece ever offered at public sale was auctioned off last year for US$ 140 thousand (R$ 494 thousand) in São Paulo.

If "Construction on Black Background" find a buyer tonight, the artwork will reach its maximum record.
