The honeymoon period at Rio's Museu do Amanhã lasted little more than 40 days. This weekend, the building, which cost nearly R$300 million (US $75.3 million) was already displaying the first signs of damage.
The visitors who waited for an hour and a half in the Praça Mauá to enter the museum on Sunday (January 31) came face-to-face with an incomplete world - starting with the 3D globe on which the world map and changes caused by human activity are projected.
Part of the projections around the equator are not working, meaning it is impossible to see Brazil from half the angles.
Going beyond the entrance hall, there are more problems. The "Perimetral" exhibition was closed at the weekend. According to employees of the museum, this was due to broken equipment.
Visitors that ascended from here to the permanent collection via the ramp on the right-hand side may also have noticed that one of Calatrava's windows is cracked. The cracks have spread throughout the whole pane of glass, but it remains in place.
After receiving a list of the damage found just six weeks after its opening, the institution responded to Folha with the following statement:
"Many of the installations at the Museu do Amanhã make use of technology, and eventually they may require maintenance. This maintenance is conducted as swiftly as possible. However, in some cases it depends on the agendas of specialized supply companies."
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story suggested, erroneously, that the problems in the Museu do Amanhã result from architect Santiago Calatrava's project. It also stated that the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia and the Ponte della Costituzione in Venice suffer from structural problems, which is incorrect.
