GUILHERME GENESTRETI
SPECIAL ENVOY TO BERLIN

As the gala screening of Marcelo Gomes' Brazilian movie "Joaquim" took place at the Berlin Film Festival Thursday night (16), audience members chanted "Fora, Temer" ("Out, Temer").

The movie, which tells the story of Tiradentes, is one of the 12 Brazilian movies that will be screened, and the only one which will fight for the Golden Bear Award.

Among the many spectators were people holding up signs that read "Temer Raus" ("Out, Temer" in German). After the movie ended, the director got on stage and said that Brazil "underwent a parliamentary coup".

At a screening for journalists in the morning, the director had already read a statement signed by people representing the other Brazilian movies participating in the festival, calling for the preservation of public policies that foment Brazilian cinema.

The statement was also backed by another 300 professionals in the audiovisual sector both in Brazil and abroad, all of whom made clear their concerns regarding the future of Ancine (the National Movie Agency), while also praising the numbers behind the sector's productivity over the last few years.

The sector's professionals are mainly concerned about the change in command at the agency. Ancine's current director, Manoel Rangel, who has been in charge of the agency for 10 years, will step down in May.
