FROM SÃO PAULO

The Military Police arrested an officer from Rocam (the motorized unit of the Military Police) who shot two suspects during a police chase on Tuesday night (23), in Jardim São Luis, in the South Zone of São Paulo.

The chase was broadcast live on TV stations. In the images, the MP is seen shooting the suspects even after they have fallen off the motorcycle.

According to the unit, the officers were on patrol when they found two suspects on a stolen motorcycle and tried to approach them. The pair, however, ignored the stop order and tried to escape.

In a statement, the MP said that the images from the chase will be evaluated and Internal Affairs will investigate whether or not the suspects tried to shoot the officer even after they were down -as reported by the individuals responsible for the operation.

The two suspects, ages 16 and 17, were rescued, but the state of their health is unknown.

In a statement on Wednesday (24), the Secretary of State for Public Security, Alexandre de Moraes said that the strong images shown on television indicate that the officer executed a "serious irregularity".

"We are going to investigate [the case]. However, from the images, we have already gathered that a serious irregularity took place. Even though the criminals fired, they were on the ground when the officer fired the two shots", the secretary said.
