FROM SÃO PAULO
On August 23, the City of São Paulo will inaugurate two terraces around Paulista Avenue, in downtown São Paulo.
The event will take place on the same day that the avenue will be closed to cars for the second time - the first time took place on June 28 during the inauguration of its cycling lane.
The terraces were handed over to businessmen to carry out revitalization works. One of them, which is on a street behind MASP (São Paulo Art Musem), will have a view of the Nove de Julho Avenue.
At each end of the terrace a wooden counter will be installed. In one of them there will be a café. In the other, a restaurant.
Businessman Facundo Guerra, owner of PanAm and Riviera, a nightclub and a restaurant respectively, is a partner of this project alongside the architecture office MM18, author of the planning.
According to Facundo Guerra's press office, the inauguration date was initially scheduled for August 16 but has been postponed to match the new closure of Paulista avenue.
For several years the space behind MASP served as a resting place for the homeless.
The other terrace will be on Marechal Cordeiro de Farias square, known as Arches square (Praça dos Arcos) also near Paulista avenue. On site, there will be a bike rack and a restaurant.
The administration of Mayor Fernando Haddad (Workers' Party) is dealing with these openings as the second and perhaps last test before the likely announcement of the closure of the avenue every Sunday.
"It will be a time for the project we call Paulista park to expand", the mayor told Folha.
The closure will take place during the inauguration of the cycling lane on Bernardino de Campos avenue, which will connect Paulista avenue to Vergueiro street in São Paulo's southern area.
