FROM SÃO PAULO

Citizens who contribute to the investigation of the death of 18 people in the Greater São Paulo, on Thursday (13) evening, may be rewarded with R$ 50,000 (approximately $ 14,400). The payment will be made if the information helps the inquiries.

Governor Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB) said on Monday (17) that the case was included in the indictment program. The information should be given through the internet on the website www.webdenuncia.org.br. Confidentiality is guaranteed.

On Thursday (13) evening, 18 people were killed and six were injured in the cities of Osasco and Barueri, in the Greater São Paulo, in a three-hour interval. The crimes occurred within a radius of 10 km.

Alckmin, on Friday (14), described the crime as a "very serious" one. "Given the number of deaths and injuries. Finally, there is a need to clarify the relation between them [the deaths]. The causes to this and the arrest of the criminals."

The Military Police Internal Affairs will interrogate policemen who may be involved in the case. Authorities suspect that the killings may be related to the death of a policeman during a robbery at a gas station in Osasco (in the Greater São Paulo).

Military policemen in battalions in Osasco, Barueri and other cities of the Greater São Paulo exchanged messages by cell phone to prepare a revenge on the death.

The thesis that the police might be involved in the attacks was reinforced by the inclusion of the internal affairs in the investigations, which was confirmed by Alckmin administration on Saturday (15) afternoon.
