FROM SÃO PAULO
A woman who ran over and killed two workers in São Paulo in the early hours of Sunday (18) morning has had her preventive detention revoked and will be released on bail, after paying a fee of R$15,760 (US $4055) - the equivalent of 20 monthly minimum wages.
Police say that Juliana Cristina da Silva, 28, was intoxicated when she drove her Vectra into an area where workers were painting signage on the Avenida Luiz Dumont Villares.
According to the Traffic Engineering Company (CET), the organization responsible for management of São Paulo's road network, Silva fled the scene without stopping to help the two workers she had hit.
José Hailton de Andrade, 53, died at the scene. Raimundo Barbosa dos Santos, 38, was taken to the Santa Casa hospital, where he died at around 4am. Both were from the state of Piauí in northeast Brazil.
Alexandre de Moraes, secretary of public security, said that Silva, an administrator, would be charged with murder.
Andrade is survived by his wife, six children and five grandchildren, Barbosa dos Santos by his wife and four children. Their remains will be taken to Piauí, where part of their families still live.
After the incident, Silva was followed by witnesses and arrested by the police three kilometers the scene. She was breathalyzed, with the police observing a blood alcohol content of 0.85mm per liter of breath exhaled.
Under Brazilian law, it is a crime to be in charge of a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of above 0.34mm/L.
Juliana's mother, Silvania de Abreu e Silva, was unavailable for comment.
