Project Instals Vertical Gardens in São Paulo Overpass

FROM SÃO PAULO

A study carried out in major São Paulo avenues in 2013 showed that they contain 500 windowless walls.

Nearly one hundred of those are in the Minhocão overpass region, which, by coincidence, is one of the most polluted areas in the city.

That is why the Minhocão overpass was chosen to house the green corridor of the Movimento 90º, a project of social and environmental impact.

"In addition to reducing the problem of pollution, the initiative changes the landscape," says Guil Blanche, the creator of the project. "It is a tool for urban rehabilitation."

Six vertical gardens were inaugurated officially on Sunday, September 11 - and four more are likely to be ready by the end of the year. At 2:00 p.m. Blanche led a tour around the area.

Contemporary artists were chosen to produce the works. Pedro Wirz's work is inspired by the carranca, a Brazilian folkloric figurehead, while Renata de Bonis made an intervention with LED lights.

The project was paid for by the companies that make up for environmental debts by investing in green areas.

The companies will be responsible for the gardens' upkeep for the next six months. After that, the maintenance will be transferred to São Paulo City Hall.

Presidente João Goulart Overpass. Access ramp from Consolação street to Minhocão. Sunday. From 2:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. FREE
