MARCELO QUAZ
FROM SÃO PAULO

The 92nd edition of the São Silvestre road race - one of the most traditional races of the sort in Latin America - will alter its 15-kilometer course. The race will be this Saturday (the 31st).

Some of the streets that were used up until last year will be removed from the itinerary. Such is the case of the lanes providing a view of the Latin America Memorial.

According to the organizing committee, some of the streets were too narrow and close to the starting line, jamming up competitors.

The new course will include more laps around downtown São Paulo, mainly around República Square.

Other landmarks in the state capital will also be contemplated, such as the Mário de Andrade Library and the City Council.

All 30 thousand spots were filled this year - a feat that has occurred since 2014.

Among the competitors are several top-tier athletes, of which 72 are men and 46 are women.

Kenyan athlete Paul Tergat holds the men's record (43 minutes and 12 seconds, in 1995), while Priscah Jeptoo - also a Kenyan - holds the women's record (48 minutes and 48 seconds).

Kenyan athlete Stanley Biwott is expected to finish in first among the men, while Ethiopian athlete Ymer Wude Ayalew is considered the favorite among women for the 2016 edition. Ayalew is going for her 4th win.

Brazilians are counting on Giovani dos Santos and Joziane Cardoso to win.

Dos Santos, who is from Minas Gerais, managed to secure the best position among Brazilians last year and will be starting in 5th place this year, while Joziane Cardoso won the gold medal at the half marathon in Rio and silver medals at the half marathon in São Paulo and the Volta da Pampulha in Belo Horizonte.
