A family New Year's Eve gathering ended in tragedy in a home in Campinas, in São Paulo's interior.

A man invaded the home, in one of the city's middle class neighborhoods, and shot his ex-wife, 8 year old son and 10 other people.

According to the Military Police, the 46 year old Sidnei Araújo lab technician killed himself in the process with a shot to the head using a 9 mm pistol.

The other victims died with gunshot wounds to the chest and ribs region. Three people made it out unharmed. Two hid in bathrooms in the home, and the third, Aparecida Maria de Oliveira Batista, was spared - she held a baby in her lap.

The crime occurred at the end of the night on Saturday (31), with a few minutes left before the new year. The shooter arrived by car, jumped a wall and began to shoot.

The main target was his 41 year old ex-wife Isamara Filier. She was separated from Sidnei, who had not accepted the end of the relationship after 3 years.

Relatives of the lab technician say that he would complain about being unable to see his son.

According to one witness, the separation came after it was suspected that the shooter had sexually abused his son.

President Michel Temer (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party) shared his condolences and expressed regret over the incident and the victims of the shooting. "May 2017 be a year of greater peace," he wrote on a social media network.
