FROM SAO PAULO

Five days after a police operation in Cracolandia (Crackland) in the center of São Paulo, drug addicts have spread to various parts of the region such as Paulista avenue, as well as the space underneath the Joao Goulart overpass which is also known as the Minhocão.

All 23 occupied areas have been mapped out by the GCM (the Metropolitan Civil Guard), which is commanded by the administration of mayor Joao Doria (Brazilian Social Democracy Party).

The officers have accompanied the movements of those who belonged to the former "flow" (fluxo) - a term used to describe outdoor spots where drugs are dealt and consumed.

Since Sunday (the 21st) - when a state government operation arrested drug dealers and cleared streets in the region that were obstructed - drug addicts have been moving around to adjacent neighborhoods such as Barra Funda and Liberdade.

Most of them, however, simply crossed Rio Branco Avenue and settled down only 400 meters away from the former "flow", setting up a new 'Cracolandia' at Princesa Isabel square.

According to the Civil Guard's report, addicts tend to bunch together at night. Folha reporters noticed that during the day most addicts aimlessly wander the streets of downtown São Paulo.
