PAULO SALDAÑA
FROM SÃO PAULO
São Paulo's mayor, João Doria (PSDB), will no longer include "farinata", a product made out of food close to its expiration date, in the school meals of municipal schools.
The decision to stall the process was made after an embarrassing situation with the São Paulo Secretary of Education., which was not consulted before Doria announced the supplement was going to be adopted in schools, on Wednesday (18).
The city hall announced, on Thursday (19), it will focus on social services. The note says: "Any distribution of 'farinata', part of the program 'Alimento para Todos' [Food for All], will be mainly attributed to municipal social services."
The product has fueled raging controversy after Doria announced it would be distributed to low-income families. On Wednesday, Doria stated "farinata" would be available at schools this month.
Folha also found that the decision was taken after the mayor's team reached a consensus. They understood "farinata" would hardly be approved by Codae (School Food Coordination Office), related to the Ministry of Education and responsible for determining school meals.
