FROM SÃO PAULO
After suffering a reduction of 76% from last year's amount in the sponsorship contract with the Post Office, the CBT (Brazilian Tennis Confederation) cut employees and reduced the monthly allowance that it provides to top tennis players in the country.
Players like Thomaz Bellucci and Bia Haddad Maia, the highest placed Brazilians in world male and female rankings were both affected.
The amount provided to the entity's president, however, was unaffected by the reduction. Rafael Westrupp, elected in July, got an inflation increase in his salary.
His predecessor, Jorge Lacerda da Rosa, received R$ 20 thousand (US$ 6.350) in guaranteed gross monthly salary, and Westrupp will begin receiving R$22 thousand (US$ 6.985) the statutory ceiling established by the COB (Brazilian Olympic Committee).
The confederation spent R$ 112 thousand (US$ 36 thousand) to pay for airfares, shuttles, food and hotel rooms for all of the presidents of its 26 affiliated federations in a luxury hotel in Morumbi, the Southern zone of São Paulo, whose cheapest daily rate is around US$ 100.
The ceremony took place at the same time as the Brazilian Open, a tournament being held in the capital city.
All of the officials had the right to bring a guest of their choice and were issued free tickets.
In a written statement, the CBF said that "all of the actions are in conformance with the entity's bylaws, governed and approved by the Ordinary General Assembly, the entity's highest-level decision-making body".
Regarding the expenditures of R$112 thousand (US$ 36 thousand), it said that the session is a "legal requirement" that has to be carried out periodically.
