In Historic Day Brazil Takes Home 3 Gold Medals in World Swimming Championship

12/05/2014 - 09h19

FROM SÃO PAULO

The three gold medal win in the World Swimming Championship in a short course pool (25m) in Doha, Qatar, on Thursday, December 4th, represented a historic day in Brazilian swimming.

It was the first time that the Brazilian team took the podium on the same day at a World championship.

In addition to the first gold medal came a new world record in the men's 4 x 50m medley relay (a competition that is not part of the Olympic program and a debut in the short course world championship).

The team composed of Guilherme Guido, Felipe França, Nicholas Santos and Cesar Cielo finished with 1min30s51. Russia had the second best time, scored in the knockout stages on Thursday.

Brazil's second gold medal was obtained by Felipe França, who came first in the 100m breast stroke, with 56s29.

After that, Etiene Medeiros, Nicholas Santos, Larissa Oliveira and Felipe França again took the third gold in the 4 x 50m mixed medley relay, with a time of 1min37s26.

Etiene and Larissa became the first Brazilian female swimmers to get a gold medal in a world class swimming championship.

The three gold medals put the current Brazilian team on par with its past performances in 1995 and 2010, when the team saw better yields.

With these results, Brazil finished its second day at the World championship tied with Spain in the medal ranking.

On Friday, December 6th, Brazil will have another attempt at a medal with Cesar Cielo, who will compete in the men's 50m freestyle.
