FROM SÃO PAULO

Santos supporter Márcio Barreto de Toledo, 34, was hacked to death with iron bars on Sunday night in the eastern area of the state capital, the city that will receive the opening match of the World Cup.

According to witnesses, the attackers were São Paulo fans.

Toledo, who was security, had watched the game between the teams at Morumbi stadium, and then went to the headquarters of Torcida Jovem (Youth Supporters), of which he was an associate, in Jardim Aricanduva.

At about 8pm, he left the block and, with another Santos supporter, went to a nearby bus stop on Avenida Conde de Frontin.

On the way they had been approached by the assailants who got out of a black Vectra and white Corsa - the lisence plates were not noted.

While others Santos fans fled, Toledo ended up being beaten.

He was taken to Hospital do Tatuapé and died at 11:31pm. The police report, which was made just before at 9:23pm, indicates that he had head and upper body trauma.

The body is being waked at the Itaquera Cemetery, also in the east of São Paulo. The burial should take place today.

The case could be investigated by DHPP (Department of Homicides and Protection of Persons) or Decradi (Precinct of Racial Crimes and Crimes of Intolerance). Yesterday, according to a spokesperson for the DHPP, the iron bars used in the assault arrived at the department for review.

No suspects had been detained for questioning.

The widow of Toledo, Samanta Silva Ferreira dos Santos, said she had no idea of how she will take care of her son, 5 month-old César. "I was not thinking about this. It never dawned on me. I think I'll only realize it when I check his arrival time [Marcio] for service and he doesn't appear", told Folha.

"Even if it takes a long time, I want whoever did this to be identified and be in jail. Even if it isn't all of them, even if it's only half of them are one. Half it will be."

In a statement, Santos said repudiates the violence and pays "condolences to the families of the fans involved".

Toledo's case is the first fatality involving standard fans in São Paulo in 20 months.

The last victim was Corinthians supporter Reginaldo Fernandes de Sena, who was the target on June 2012 of a shot fired by a Santos fan.

The death of Toledo takes place in a tense moment in relations with organized clubs. Earlier this month, about a hundred intruders stormed the Corinthians training center to challenge the team's poor performance.

They only left the TC after speaking with Mano Menezes.
