FROM RIO
Tourists and locals took advantage of yesterday's public holiday to show up for the World Cup trophy first day exhibition.
The trophy will be displayed until Friday in a tent set by one of the World Cup's sponsors. The tent is located in an extinct parking lot of Maracanã stadium.
The event also includes the exhibition of balls, interactive electronic games, toys with references to the sport and movies of the previous events.
The entrance is free of charge, but the complete tour is only possible if booked in advance through Coca-Cola's website.
"I fulfilled my dream of seeing the trophy up-close. I hope now the team will raise it here, in July", said Gilson Damasceno, 43, a doctor from Minas Gerais, accompanied by his two sons and his wife. The group showed off their pictures next to the trophy conquered by Spain in 2010.
They did not expect to see the trophy this time, though. They planned to visit the stadium that was refurbished last year for about US$ 446.378 million.
"It was the greatest gift of our trip. We only wanted to see the pitch and we ended up seeing all of it", added the doctor. According to the organisers, about 20 thousand people visited the trophy yesterday.
The "Trophy Tour" spanned around 150 thousand kilometres, more than three times the Earth's circumference. Its journey began in September 12, 2013, when it left the Christ the Redeemer statue.
Before the exhibition opened to the public, Carlos Alberto Torres, the team's captain in 1970 tournament, in Mexico, presented it to the journalists.
"I hope it stays here after the World Cup. Often, it's a contest without surprises. There might be some surprises halfway up, but not in the decision. I guess the winner is among Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Spain", he said.
The trophy will visit all Brazilian capitals. In Sao Paulo it will be displayed from May 29, until June 1, in Shopping Itaquera.
