SPECIAL ENVOY TO RIO
In Rio you can try out all kinds of bars and sample classic Carioca cuisine all over the place: The Globo biscuit, the Oswaldo Aranha steak, that famous complete Feijoada - this dish, according to historical records, was born in the City and not in slave quarters.
Here is a script of places, whether paying a lot or a little, you can enjoy good eating in the city.
DELÍRIO TROPICAL
The Delírio Tropical is a great wildcard. The main attractions on the menu are the salads. There are showy side dishes like roasted eggplant with goat cheese and cherry tomatoes. There are also grilled dishes, crepes and sandwiches.
WHERE: Rua Garcia d'Ávila, 48, Ipanema (and 8 more locations)
FORNERIA SANTA FILOMENA
Less well-known, the Forneria has the advantage of a lack of long lines and friendlier prices (takeout dishes from R$ 29 [US$ 8.8] - R$ 38 [US$ 11.5]) with food like your grandmother's. The most creative and best served is file-mignon with 'mexido' (tasty mixture of rice, red beans, tomatoes, eggs and parmesan cheese).
WHERE: Rua Santa Filomena, 10, Praça da Bandeira
FERRO E FARINHA
At Ferro & Farinha, the experience is sui generis - in its own class: individual, open-hand prepared pizzas, with naturally rising dough, a certain zestiness, and toasted over a wood fire. Many creative pasta options for (R$ 32 [US$ 9.6] - R$ 43 [US$ 13]).
WHERE: Rua Andrade Pertence, 42, Catete
NATURALIE BISTRÔ
There is a home-like and relaxed air in this loft, which opens only for lunch, with a big shared community table. Highlights are the use of vegetable milks, clarified butter and seeds in preparation (dishes from R$34,90 [US$ 10.5] - R$37,90 [US$ 11.5])
WHERE: Rua Visconde de Caravelas, 11, Botafogo
.ORG BISTRÔ
This little restaurant in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, open from 12 pm to 8 pm, is tight, with a happy atmosphere. The menu varies from day to day, with ample vegetarian recipes.
WHERE: Avenida Olegário Maciel, 175, loja G, Barra da Tijuca
puro
Housed in a three-story home, with large windows providing a view of the trees in the Botanical Garden and Christ the Redeemer. The kitchen is from São Paulo Chef Pedro Siqueira, 38, and has great variety (dishes from R$ 61 [US$ 18.5]- R$ 86 [US$ 26]).
WHERE: Rua Visconde de Carandaí, 43, Jardim Botânico
LASAI
Located in a grand old house dating from 1902, the restaurant is a "Michelin" one-star. It serves only tasting-menus (R$ 145 [US$ 44] or R$ 295 [US$ 90]), finger foods made of ingredients like chayote, egg, squash and pumpkin.
WHERE: Rua. Conde de Irajá, 191, Botafogo
DA ROBERTA
The locale has a very urban environment, with graffiti art, loud music, and concrete banquettes. The ingredients are hand crafted: sausages and weiners from São Paulo Braganca and cheese from arid Pernambuco.
