CARLOS BOZZO JUNIOR
FROM THE DIAMANTINA PLATEAU

Jutting out of the countryside of the State of Bahia, the Chapada Diamantina (Diamantina Plateau) boasts a singular scenic beauty and is considered to be the birthplace for the State's waterways. Flowing from an area larger than the country of Switzerland, springs and rivers supply dozens of municipalities, running through valleys, canyons, waterfalls and mountains sculpted during billions of years by the water and wind.

There is ample space for leisure activities as well as simple contemplation, with trails and perfect spots for, or course, diving and swimming in copper colored waters.

In addition to the nature itself, high quality cultural activities continually attract tourists to the region.

Events like Conecta Chapada (Connect the Plateau), the Capão Jazz Festival, the Blues Encounter, the Chorinho Festival and the Forró (For All) Festivals in Mucugê, the Igatu Festival and the Plateau Festivals in Lençóis, and many religious and traditional festivals guarantee the cultural diversity.

They also guarantee high occupancy rates for hotels, lodges and even the homes of residents who rent them out to visitors during periods surrounding these events. For this reason, it is best to make reservations before going to the region to avoid difficulties in finding lodging.

The distances between the nature attractions and the tourist cities in the Diamantina Plateau region are significant. It is best to choose one city as a base and to schedule sufficient time, and then take into consideration that it will be necessary to travel from one locale to another on roads that aren't always paved. Contracting a guide is highly recommended if not practically a necessity.

The greatest concentration of interesting sights and activities in the Plateau region is in the area surrounding the cities of Andaraí, Lençóis, Rio das Contas, Palmeiras, Mucugê, Ibicoara and Vale do Capão.
